If Jesus Was on Facebook Would You Add Him As Your Friend?

I have come to notice that my Friday blogs have taken on a “freaky-Friday” sort of light-hearted quality. I figure readership is a little down on Friday evenings into Saturday and those who do read prefer a shorter text. This Friday evening post in no different.

The video below reminds me of an old Gospel song that says, Jesus is on the Main Line, tell him what you want, call him up and tell him what you want.

The song in the video below is silly, but with a serious message. With all the communicating we do today, how likely is it that God can get a message through?

It also leads me to ponder, what if the Lord WERE on Facebook? Let’s consider a few things:

  1. The fact is God is not on Facebook in any conventional way. When you Go to Jesus’ page the “Facebook” logo is replaced with Seek always the face of the Lord (Psalm 105:4).
  2. And to those who think they have “friended” Jesus, the Lord sends the reply, It was not you who chose me, it was I who chose you. (Jn 15:16)
  3. And to those who have confirmed the friend request of Jesus, comes the reply:  No one can confirm Jesus as “friend” except by the Holy Spirit (cf 1 Cor 12:3).
  4. And if you choose to write on Jesus’ wall it isn’t there,  since Scripture says, For he himself is our peace, who has made the two one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility (Eph 2:14).
  5. And as for Jesus writing on your wall, he doesn’t have to. For Scripture says he’s looking right through it and speaking to you: There he stands behind our wall, gazing through the window, peering through the lattice…saying arise my beloved and come... (Song of Songs 2:9-10). Yes, that’s right Jesus can see right through your computer screen and into your very soul. No need to write on a wall, he speaks directly to your heart.
  6. On the “friends” tab on Jesus’ page is only this statement: You are my friend if you do what I command you (Jn 15:14). And again, I call you friend, for I have revealed to you everything I have heard from my Father (Jn 15:15)
  7. And when you look for the number of Jesus’ friends, there is no number listed, but only this message: Strive to enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it. (Matt 7:13-14)
  8. And as for the new timeline view in Facebook, you wouldn’t want that option on Jesus’ page since it would use all  computer memory in the world, as Scripture says,  Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written (John 21:25). And again, How precious to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them! Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand (Psalm 139:17-18).

OK. You get the point. If Jesus is on Facebook, he breaks all the conventions and reverses all expectations. He is there, but on his own terms and not on the shifting changing terms of Facebook’s fickle terms.

  1. Jesus is bigger than Facebook. He’s more like Google and can put you on the path to the right solutions and answers. Like my seventh grade homeroom science teacher like to say, “Talk is cheap, it’s the performance on the job that counts.”

    you do realise that you are God`s man in Washington, don`t you?
    And since Washington is the capitol of the US, that makes you God`s man in the US.

    An important position.

    So it is way more likely that He would seek out your blog, than you finding Him on Facebook.
    If I were you, I`d assume He`d seek out my blog and drop me a line or two whenever there was something He wanted.

    Especially since “Simplicity” is within God`s nature.

    I never understood why talking to God is supposed to be hard, mystical, unavailable and miraculous,
    when it can be easy, direct and, as a matter of speaking, in your face.

    Ezechiel got the message the hard, mystical, unavailable and miraclous way.
    It rendered him incapacitated for quite some time.

    Granted, the Ezechiel way does not leave much room for doubt,
    – but it does not leave much room for discussion either.

    I think Ezechiel would have preferred The Lord dropping him a few lines on his blog instead.
    It seems a friendlier method of communicating.

  3. Facebook is not for real friends. Facebook is for people you knew in high school but have made no real effort to keep in touch with. It’s for people you haven’t seen or spoken with in years.

    Come to think of it, I guess a lot of people would “friend” Jesus.

  8. Thanks Msgr.i love it. God’s Holy Spirit works a lot on FB, you only need to feel His presence in the name of your FB Friends.

  10. What a funny video! It was all hysterically comical in a down home way. Thank you for creating it! You know what – this is funny, too – I call myself “Popessa” on Facebook for the feminine perspective so often neglected when all the bishops, cardinals and the pope do the job. I am not at the top; I am at the rear of the procession, making sure that by demonstrating Christian piety that there will be no stragglers. I may not have the great mind of Pope Benedict XVI, but I am full of love for the entire human race. Perhaps there will be another Popessa once I am gone. My website:

  14. I remember visiting the facebook page of a friend who is already a mother. Her primary picture is that of her children. and most of her posts are about her children. I bet that if Mary also had a facebook account, most of her posts will be about Jesus!

  15. The reason that Jesus is not on FB is that he prefers real books with real pages and words on them. He keeps talking to me through scripture almost like it was written for me, some days. Could he have planned it that way…hmmmmmm?!?!?!

  16. I saw a billboard board outside a Protestant church that read: “Prayer, the original wireless communication”. Jesus has been “wireless” forever.

  19. I DEFINTELY WOULD, but you know, Jesus is in one place only I truly believe, in YOUR HEART!!!! He is everywhere; could be in a close friend you confide in, a member of your immediate family, even in your dog. Always remember that whatever one may be going through in their life be it a happy occasion, a loss in a family member, loss of employment, sickness that alters your way of life; DON’T GIVE UP B/C Jesus Loves Us know matter what; uncoditional love; HOW AWESOME IS THAT. It was written as a tongue in cheek way of asking that question with the intent to draw the listener to a silly concept with a serious underlying question. “Have we become so absorbed in our electronics and various ways of communication that we’ve forgotten they value of a personal and communicative relationship with Christ.
