Well, that is why I knew my words would be controversial. I think there are many who hold your view. I guess we're dealing with a judgment call here for it also oftentimes happens that when something is excoriated and made taboo that it becomes more attractive and powerful in its ability to influence. I respect your judgement though I differ with some of it. I suppose every parent needs to do what they think is best.

My thing is...since pagans started this whole thing, why did the early church leaders even try to off set the pagan belief. Christians ought not to get involved with or participate in an devilish, ghoulish, or spiritual event like Halloween, lest they open the door for evil spirits to attack them. It just sends the wrong message to concerned catholic Christians like myself. Let's not play with fire or it might just burn us...

Jesus is Lord and Saviour...Amen

Dear Msgr Pope,

You mention that Halloween is a time is 'mocking evil, death and the occult.' In this respect, do you fear that some may interpret this as insulting our own Christian day that follows, All Saint's Day? As it is a celebration of those that are now with God, I could see where some who are not Christians may think it is a contradiction to 'mock death' with Halloween, and then celebrate those who have gone before us...

Just more food for thought.

Well, I suppose anything we do can be misconstrued by others. Further, even the Devil can use good things as he did when he tried to tempt Jesus with Scripture, So, in the end I guess it's OK to enjoy our freedom in Christ while being careful to explain our actions lest the young or possibly the weak misconstrue or be scandalized by our behavior.

Dear Msgr,
What you were doing was evident to you but I wonder could those who follow the father of lies tell that your dressing up and carrying on in the same manner as they was all based on your mocking evil, and upon the wonderful things you have explained in detail here about the Catholic origin of the hallow eve?
